Where the annular eclipse can be seen

Wikipedia traces the track: “The path of annularity will first pass through Chile (including the city of Castro and the island Melinka) and Argentina (including the city of Viedma), then scraping the east coast of Uruguay (including the city of Punta del Este) and Brazil (including the city of Santa Vitória do Palmar). The eclipse will then pass across the South Atlantic Ocean, terminating on the West African coast, where it will pass over the southeastern Ivory Coast (including the city of Abidjan), southern Ghana (including the capital Accra), southern Togo (including the capital Lomé), southern Benin (including Cotonou and the capital Porto-Novo), and southwestern Nigeria (including Lagos).”

Beyond the central path the Sun is only partly covered. In Wikipedia’s words, “A partial eclipse will be visible in much of South America, parts of Antarctica, and much of the western half of Africa.”

Looking at the Sun without proper protection can injure the eyes at every partial phase. Use eclipse glasses made for the purpose or a pinhole projector; only during totality itself, inside the path, is the uncovered sight of the eclipse safe, and never during an annular eclipse, when a ring of the Sun stays bright.

The eclipse in the sky of 2027

The eclipse belongs to the New Moon of 6 February, exact at 15:56 UTC at 17°37′ Aquarius, 3 minutes before the greatest eclipse, and it falls at the Moon’s ascending node. The same New Moon opens the Chinese year of the Fire Goat, which begins on 6 February.

A solar eclipse in Aquarius, the fixed air sign the old books gave to Saturn, is read by astrologers as a turning in the life of groups: what a circle of friends, a team or a cause is for, and who still belongs to it.

Because it falls at the north node, the point modern astrologers read as where a story is gathering rather than letting go, the February eclipse is read as an opening more than an ending, a door into a different kind of company.

Astrologers have long treated eclipses as the sky’s punctuation marks, the places where one chapter is said to close and another to open.
