What sets First House apart

The first house is counted from the eastern horizon downward, the stretch of sky about to rise, and it opens the run of six houses beneath the horizon that end with the sixth. Its marker is the Ascendant, and the Greeks named the house after it, horoskopos, the hour-marker; Firmicus calls it ortus, the rising. Mercury has his joy here, the one planetary joy that sits at the horizon itself. The other houses are named by their angle to it.

What the old books meant by the first place

The first house is the sign that is rising on the eastern horizon. The Greeks called it the horoskopos, the marker of the hour, and Dorotheus calls it simply the ascendent. Firmicus Maternus, writing in Latin in the fourth century, names it ortus, the rising, and says it holds the life and breath of the native and the foundation of the whole chart. In al-Qabisi's tenth-century list the first house covers the body, the soul, life, beginnings and undertakings, and he assigns it the beginning of a human life.

In the whole-sign system the entire rising sign is the first house, not only the degrees past the Ascendant. Benjamin Dykes, who translated the medieval texts, points out that the same sign can be called the first domicile, the first sign or the Ascendant, and the Latin word domus covers more than one idea.

The fifteen-degree rule and the lords of life

Dorotheus gives a practical rule in Book I (chapters 4 and 7) for deciding whether a planet counts as being in the first house. A planet within 15 degrees after the Ascendant degree counts as in it, even when it has crossed into the second sign. For survival and strength he looks at the three triplicity lords of the Ascendant sign and asks whether they stand in strong places. Jupiter rising helps, he says, and he calls a Moon besieged by malefics on both sides dangerous.

Al-Andarzaghar, quoted by al-Qabisi, gave the three triplicity lords of the first house separate jobs. The first lord shows life, the nature of the native and their pleasures. The second shows the body, virtue and the middle of life. The third shows how the matter ends, in death.

Joy, color and the quarter of the sky

Mercury rejoices in the first house, according to the planetary joys that al-Qabisi and the Abbreviation record. Dykes, citing Robert Schmidt, explains the scheme as a split of the sky: day planets rejoice above the horizon, night planets below, and Mercury sits at the horizon itself. Al-Qabisi colors the first house white, the same as the seventh.

The first house lies in the quarter of the chart between the fourth house and the Ascendant, which al-Qabisi calls northern and feminine, the quarter that retreats. The first house is also an angle, one of the four that the old authors call strong places. Dorotheus ranks it first of all the places, ahead of the midheaven.
