What sets Transit apart
A transit compares where a planet stands today, taken from the ephemeris, with a fixed point in the birth chart, such as the natal Moon or the Ascendant. The natal point does not move; only the transiting planet does, at its own speed, so the same point is touched often by the Moon and only once in decades by Pluto. A slow planet near a retrograde can make the same contact three times.
- Moves: the current planet; the natal point stays fixed
- Moon: about 13.2 degrees a day, round the whole chart in about 27.3 days
- Jupiter: about 30 degrees a year, so one sign a year on average
- Saturn and beyond: Saturn about 12 degrees a year, Uranus 4, Neptune 2, Pluto 1.5 on average
- Triple pass: a station near the point means direct, retrograde and direct again, three exact contacts
Often mistaken for something else: A transit uses the real sky of the day. A secondary progression moves the natal chart forward at a day for a year, which is symbolic and not the current sky.
