What sets Ascendant apart
The Ascendant is the exact point where the ecliptic meets the eastern horizon, so it is the one chart point fixed by both the clock and the latitude of the birthplace. It sweeps the whole zodiac in a sidereal day, about 23 hours 56 minutes, but unevenly: depending on latitude, a sign takes from about an hour to more than three to rise. Its opposite, the Descendant, is always exactly 180 degrees away. The Greeks called it horoskopos, the hour-marker, and the word horoscope came from it.
