What sets Imum Coeli apart
Imum Coeli is the Latin for the lowest part of the sky: the ecliptic degree on the lower meridian, the line running north to south beneath the place of birth, where the Sun stands at local midnight. It is found as the Midheaven plus 180 degrees, so it is never an independent measurement. The Greek name for the fourth place, Hypogeion, means the one beneath the earth.
- Position: exactly 180 degrees from the Midheaven, on the lower meridian
- Abbreviation: IC, from the Latin Imum Coeli, bottom of the sky
- Sign: always the sign opposite the Midheaven sign
- Old name: Hypogeion in Greek: the underground place
- House: fourth cusp in Placidus and other quadrant systems; not the cusp in whole sign houses
Often mistaken for something else: The IC is often confused with the Descendant because both are opposite points. The Descendant opposes the Ascendant on the horizon; the IC opposes the Midheaven on the meridian.
