What sets Sun apart
The Sun is the one body the others are measured against. It never turns retrograde, it keeps a near steady pace of about a degree a day, and every other planet is read by its distance from it: a planet within about 16 arcminutes is cazimi, in the heart; within roughly 7.5 to 8.5 degrees it is burned, depending on the author; within 15 degrees it is under the rays. In Hellenistic doctrine it leads the diurnal sect, and it sits fourth of seven in the Chaldean order, exactly in the middle of the planets.

- Time in each sign: about 29.4 to 31.5 days, longest in the signs of northern summer
- Sect: leader of the diurnal sect, with Jupiter and Saturn; Mercury joins it when rising before the Sun
- Joy: the ninth house, in the planetary joys listed by al-Qabisi
- Exaltation degree: 19 degrees of Aries in the later tradition; Ptolemy names the sign only
- Ptolemy's quality: heats and moderately dries, strongest near the zenith (Tetrabiblos I.4)

Sun in the traditional textbooks
The Sun is the planet the whole system hangs from. Ptolemy has the ether act on the elements below it, with the Sun dominant, and Firmicus Maternus invokes it as the mind and temperament of the world, set in the middle of the sky between Saturn above and the Moon below. In the day and night teams the Sun leads the day, and the chart is a day chart when the Sun stands above the horizon.
- Nature (Ptolemy): The Sun heats and moderately dries, with its effect greatest near the zenith.
- Class (Ptolemy): common (neither benefic nor malefic).
- Sex (Ptolemy): masculine. Team: the day team.
- Sphere (Firmicus): the middle sphere, with the Moon below and Saturn at the top.
- Orb (Abu Ma'shar): 15 degrees.
- Body (Ptolemy): the eyes, brain, heart, nerves and right side. Body (Burgoyne, 1896): the heart.
Sun: dignities, bounds and strength
Where the Sun is strong, according to the same few authors:
- Domicile: Leo. Ptolemy's reason: Leo is, with Cancer, the northernmost sign, nearest the zenith and hottest, so it goes to a luminary.
- Detriment: Aquarius, the sign opposite its own.
- Exaltation: 19 degrees of Aries, because the Sun enters the higher, northern half of the sky there and the days lengthen (Ptolemy). Fall: 19 degrees of Libra.
- Joy by sign (Dorotheus): Leo (added by Sahl, per Dykes). Joy by house (al-Qabisi): the ninth house.
- Triplicity: day lord of the fire signs (Aries, Leo and Sagittarius) (Dorotheus).
The Sun takes no bounds, since the Sun and Moon have none.
The Sun rules 5 of the 36 decans: second decan of Aries, third decan of Gemini, first decan of Virgo, second decan of Scorpio, third decan of Capricorn.
Sun: people, years and the limb in each sign
Hill draws the seven-branched candlestick as the planets, with the central light the Sun, the Moon, Mercury and Venus on one side and Mars, Jupiter and Saturn on the other. He also argues that the second person of the old triads was "God Sol", the genius of the sun, the Lord of Good in spring and summer and the Lord of Evil in autumn and winter, symbolized by the serpent. Those are his claims. Burgoyne calls the Sun the central force, the source of the vital springs of life in a man and of love in a woman, electric, hot and commanding. See Sun Sign for the modern use.
Ptolemy gives it the father (with Saturn). Among siblings, Dorotheus assigns it older brothers (with Saturn); when it rules the second house, he traces a decline in fortune to fathers, a father's women, or a debt. Dorotheus's figure for the years of evil an angular planet holds off is 19 years, for a diurnal birth only.
Al-Qabisi gives each planet a limb in each sign, the part that shows illness when it is troubled there. For the Sun:
