What sets Ninth House apart
The Ninth is the house the Hellenistic astrologers named God (Theos), set directly against the Third, the house of the Goddess. It stands in trine to the rising sign, the most agreeable of the sign relations, yet it is cadent, a house that turns away from the angles. The Sun has its joy here, which is why the older texts link it with the divine, with dreams and with prophecy rather than with study alone.
- Traditional name: God (Greek Theos, Latin Deus)
- Planetary joy: the Sun, which gladdens in this house
- Type: cadent, one of houses 3, 6, 9 and 12
- Sign relation to rising sign: trine, 120 degrees, by Whole Sign Houses
- Opposite house: the Third, the Goddess, joy of the Moon
- Natural-zodiac match: Sagittarius, ruled by Jupiter
Often mistaken for something else: The Third House also concerns learning, but it is the near, everyday kind: siblings, short journeys, basic schooling. The Ninth is the far kind: foreign lands, divine matters and the highest study.
A one-minute story
The Twelve Places
How the turning sky was cut into twelve places, and what each was read for.

The place of God
Firmicus Maternus calls the ninth house Deus, God, from the Greek theos, and ranks it above the third, the Goddess, in his order of the places. Al-Qabisi lists pilgrimage and travel, faith and religion, wisdom, philosophy, books, letters, dreams, reports, and stars and omens, and gives it the beginning of the second half of life. He colors it honey, the same as the fifth.
It stands in trine to the Ascendant, and Firmicus counts it among the four strong places that follow the angles.
The Sun rejoices here
The Sun's joy is the ninth house. Dykes explains the day planets as rejoicing above the horizon, and the ninth lies there, in the southern, feminine quarter that al-Qabisi calls retreating and links to youth and middle age.
Dorotheus ranks the ninth only seventh best of the places, below the angles, the eleventh and the fifth. Al-Qabisi calls the third and ninth the public cadent houses.
What the three lords of the ninth say
Al-Andarzaghar reads the ninth house's three triplicity lords as pilgrimage, faith, and wisdom and dreams. The pairing of God (ninth) with Goddess (third) lines up with the joys of the Sun and the Moon.
The story behind Ninth House
Traditional astrology often gave the Ninth House religious, divinatory, dream, and pilgrimage themes.
