What sets Third House apart

The third house is the Goddess: Firmicus Maternus calls it Dea, from the Greek thea, and the Hellenistic naming sets the ninth, the God, against it. It is the Moon's joy, set below the horizon among the night planets in the account Dykes takes from Schmidt. It holds a double charge that seems odd today: al-Qabisi lists siblings and kin together with faith and religion, law, rumours, messengers and short journeys. Dorotheus nonetheless lists it among the evil places, with the Moon as the exception.

The goddess place, and the brothers

Firmicus Maternus calls the third house Dea, the Goddess, from the Greek thea, and assigns it brothers and friends, with travel and a stay abroad. In al-Qabisi it is the house of siblings and kin, including a wife's relatives, with faith and religion, law, rumors, messengers, and short journeys and moves. Dorotheus names it the place where the Moon rejoices.

The third house is in a weak relation to the rising sign. It makes only a sextile to the Ascendant, and Firmicus calls the aspect weak. Dorotheus lists the third among the evil places in Book I, chapter 10, with the Moon as the exception, which is consistent with giving it to the Moon as her joy.

Why the Moon rejoices here

The planetary joys that al-Qabisi records give the Moon the third house, Venus the fifth, Mars the sixth, and the day planets the upper houses. Dykes, following Schmidt, reads the pattern as night planets rejoicing under the horizon. The third house is below it, in the quarter al-Qabisi calls northern and feminine.

Al-Qabisi colors the third house orange; his Arabic word means yellow and is probably saffron. He pairs it with the eleventh in color. He also notes that the third and ninth houses are the public cadent houses, as opposed to the hidden sixth and twelfth.

Counting brothers and sisters

Dorotheus works out the number of siblings in Book I (chapters 18 to 21). A Moon or Ascendant in Leo or Sagittarius means few brothers, and Scorpio, Cancer or Pisces rising means many. He assigns the planets as siblings: Saturn and the Sun older brothers, Jupiter and Mars those in the middle, Mercury younger brothers, the Moon older sisters and Venus younger sisters. A lot of brothers is taken from Saturn to Jupiter, which Valens and Paulus use the same way by day and by night (the Arabic Carmen's wording reads differently; see the Lot of Siblings).

Al-Andarzaghar reads the three lords of the house as the older, middle and younger brothers. A worked example in Dorotheus counts by signs, with two-bodied signs counted double.

Traditional astrology linked the Third House with siblings, short journeys, messages, and the goddess or lunar joy in some systems.
