Hellenistic house structure
Angular Triad
Direct answer
The four triads are houses 12-1-2 around the Ascendant, 3-4-5 around the IC, 6-7-8 around the Descendant, and 9-10-11 around the MC. Calling houses 1, 4, 7, and 10 alone an angular triad is incorrect; those are the four angular houses.
An angular triad is a group of three consecutive houses organized around one angle: the cadent house before it, the angular house itself, and the succedent house after it. Four such triads divide the twelve houses into coherent sectors.
Angular Triad means the set of angular houses that anchor action, visibility, relationship, and foundations.

The Instruments
Ten readings, worked out from your own birth chart
An instrument is a reading this house works out for you. Give your birth date, time and place once, and each one reads today’s real sky against the chart you were born under. Eight are personal; two are calendars anyone can open. A free account opens one instrument a day. The plans open every instrument, every day.

Cadent, angular, and succedent around an angle
In zodiacal order, a cadent house leads into an angular house, and a succedent house follows it. Thus the twelfth prepares the first, while the second supports or follows the first; the same pattern repeats around the other three pivots. “Before” and “after” here refer to the order of signs and houses, not the apparent daily motion by which planets move toward an angle from a different visual direction. The triad model groups topical houses around a central place of action and prominence.
The four triads and their broad domains
The Ascendant triad 12-1-2 centers bodily life, identity, survival, and resources; the IC triad 3-4-5 gathers local kinship, foundations, ancestry, continuity, children, and creation; the Descendant triad 6-7-8 concentrates obligation, conflict or partnership, exchange, vulnerability, and mortality; the MC triad 9-10-11 joins belief and preparation to public action, authority, alliance, and benefit. These summaries are interpretive maps, not replacements for each house’s historically diverse significations.
Angular triads and the planetary joys
Research into Hellenistic astrology has used the four triads to illuminate the planetary joys, the houses in which the seven traditional planets were said to rejoice. The joys distribute across hemispheres and triadic relationships in ways connected with sect, horizon, and house doctrine. Scholarly reconstructions debate which conceptual structure came first and how the scheme developed. The important point is that the triads offer more than a modern mnemonic: they expose relationships among neighboring houses that isolated keyword lists often hide.
How to use the model without erasing house differences
Begin with the central angle, then compare its cadent antecedent and succedent aftermath. A planet in the ninth can prepare tenth-house public action through study, travel, law, or belief; a planet in the eleventh can show allies, hopes, and gains that follow from or support that action. Do not declare all three houses equally angular or equally strong. House system also matters: the historical triad logic is especially clear in whole-sign houses, while a quadrant MC may fall outside the tenth sign. State the framework before drawing conclusions. The model is relational: it supplements detailed house doctrine rather than replacing twelve distinct places with four broad labels.

Common questions
Are the four angular houses an angular triad?
No. They are four separate angles. Each angle centers its own three-house group, producing four angular triads across all twelve houses.
Why does each triad begin with a cadent house?
In zodiacal house order, the cadent place precedes the angle and the succedent place follows it. This creates the repeated cadent-angular-succedent sequence.
Does an angular triad make all three houses equally powerful?
No. The angular house retains its distinctive angularity. The triad expresses topical and structural relationship, not identical strength.
