What sets Tenth House apart
The Tenth is the house that culminates: the part of the sky highest above the place where one stands, where the Sun stands at midday. That position, not an abstract idea of career, is why it is the house of action and rank. It is angular, in square to the rising sign, and it sits directly opposite the Fourth, so the visible summit of the chart always faces the hidden foundation.

The midheaven, and what it meant
The tenth house is the sign at the top of the sky. Dorotheus calls it the midheaven and ranks it second among the places, just below the ascendent. Firmicus Maternus gives its Latin name, medium caelum, with the Greek mesuranima, and says it governs life, spirit, actions, the home country, residence, and all arts and livelihood. Al-Qabisi lists a kingdom, work, loftiness, fame and memory, masteries and mothers, and gives it the middle of life. He colors it red.
Al-Andarzaghar reads the three triplicity lords as work and exaltation, voice and courage, and stability.
The tenth sign or the midheaven degree
Firmicus counts the midheaven as the 271st degree from the horoscope, 270 degrees on. He admits that the tenth sign is sometimes the one that holds that degree and sometimes the eleventh. Dykes explains the practical result: in whole sign houses career is read from the tenth sign even when the Midheaven degree falls in the ninth or eleventh sign.
In the tradition that follows quadrant houses the midheaven degree itself starts the tenth house, which is why the two systems can disagree on the planet in the career house.
When the lord of the tenth sits in another angle
Al-Qabisi gives short readings: the lord of the first in the tenth means fortune through the king, and the lord of the tenth in the fourth means kingdom, land taxes, cultivation and building cities.
The tenth house is in the quarter from the Ascendant to the midheaven that al-Qabisi calls eastern, masculine and advancing, linked to childhood. Firmicus ranks the midheaven above the imum caelum.
