What sets House System apart
A house system is a rule for cutting the ecliptic into twelve parts from the place of birth. Every system starts from the same Ascendant degree, so the rising degree is the same in all of them. They differ in how the rest are cut: some use equal 30 degree arcs, others divide the space or the time between the angles. The result changes which house each planet falls in, mainly near the cusps.
- Fixed in all: the Ascendant degree and the Descendant opposite it
- Sign based: whole sign houses, where each house is one sign
- Equal arc: equal houses, 30 degrees from the Ascendant degree
- Quadrant: Porphyry, Alcabitius, Regiomontanus, Campanus, Koch and Placidus cut the four quarters
- Unusable: Placidus and Koch fail beyond the polar circles, about 66.5 degrees of latitude
Often mistaken for something else: A house system divides the chart. A zodiac system, tropical or sidereal, fixes where the signs begin. They are separate choices.
