What sets Twelfth House apart

The Twelfth is the sign just before the rising sign, so it has no sight of the Ascendant at all: by Whole Sign Houses it is one of the four houses in aversion, the others being the Second, Sixth and Eighth. That blindness is the root of its character. Saturn has its joy here, and the Greeks called it the Bad Spirit, Kakos Daimon, the dark pair to the Eleventh's Good Spirit.

Often mistaken for something else: The Eighth House also deals in loss and the unseen, but through death, debts and what others hold. The Twelfth concerns the person alone: confinement, hidden enemies and withdrawal.

The Bad Spirit

Firmicus Maternus calls the twelfth house Malus daemon, the Bad Spirit, from the Greek kakodaimon, and counts it among the lazy places that make no aspect to the Ascendant. Dorotheus names it only by number and says the sixth and twelfth are the worst of the worst. Al-Qabisi lists enemies, labor, sorrow, envy, slander, trickery, riding animals and flocks, and hiddenness, and adds what befalls mothers in conception. He colors it green.

Firmicus groups it with the second, sixth and eighth as the places that do not see the Ascendant.

Saturn rejoices here

Saturn's joy is the twelfth house in the lists recorded by al-Qabisi. Dykes explains the day planets as rejoicing above the horizon, and the twelfth lies just above the eastern horizon, in the quarter al-Qabisi calls eastern, masculine and advancing, linked to childhood.

Al-Qabisi calls the twelfth hidden, with the sixth, and it is cadent.

Enemies, labor and servitude

Dorotheus joins the twelfth to the sixth for slavery: the Moon in the sixth or twelfth points to servitude (Book I, chapter 10). He lists the twelfth among the evil places and as a bad position for the lord of the father's lot. Al-Andarzaghar reads the three triplicity lords as enemies, labors and beasts.

Traditional astrology linked the Twelfth House with confinement, hidden enemies, sorrow, and large animals; modern practice added unconscious and spiritual themes.
