The joys by sign and by house
Planets are said to rejoice in particular places, in two different schemes.
- By sign (Dorotheus, Book I, chapter 1): Saturn in Aquarius, Jupiter in Sagittarius, Mars in Scorpio, Venus in Taurus and Mercury in Virgo. Sahl adds the Sun in Leo and the Moon in Cancer.
- By house (al-Qabisi and the Abbreviation): Mercury in the first, the Moon in the third, Venus in the fifth, Mars in the sixth, the Sun in the ninth, Jupiter in the eleventh and Saturn in the twelfth.
Dorotheus also says the Moon rejoices in the third house, which agrees with the house list.
A one-minute story
The Book of the Sky
How people learned to read the sky, from Babylon to the day you were born.

Why they rejoice where they do
Dykes, citing Robert Schmidt, explains the house scheme as a split of the sky by sect. Planets of the day rejoice above the earth, planets of the night below it, and Mercury at the horizon. The three nocturnal planets rejoice in the third, fifth and sixth houses, all below the horizon, and the Sun, Jupiter and Saturn in the ninth, eleventh and twelfth, all above it.
Firmicus Maternus confirms three of the seven: he calls the fifth house Good Fortune because it is Venus's place, the sixth Bad Fortune because it is Mars's, and the eleventh the Good Spirit and Jupiter's place. Dykes also notes that the planets rejoice in the domicile of their own sect.
Why Planetary Joy matters
Planetary Joy matters because it preserves older symbolic relationships between planets and houses.
