What sets Trine apart

The trine divides the circle in three, so one planet can trine two others at once, and the three points close into a triangle. The Greeks called a set of signs a trigon, which is why the same word names the four triplicities of fire, earth, air and water. A trine is the aspect that joins signs of one element, which is why the older books call it an aspect of friendship.

Often mistaken for something else: The sextile is the other friendly aspect, but at 60 degrees it joins different elements. The trine joins the same element, so there is nothing to translate between the two planets.

The trine in the traditional sources

The trine joins signs four apart, a third of the circle, and Abu Ma'shar rates it the highest friendship. Firmicus says the fifth house, in trine to the Ascendant, is the place of children and the quality of the birth. Ptolemy pairs it with the sextile as harmonious because it joins signs of the same sex, and every trine falls inside one of the four elements.

Distance: 120 degrees, a third of the circle. Ptolemy counts it as four signs; Abu Ma'shar counts it by whole signs, the fifth and ninth signs.
Rating (Abu Ma'shar): the highest friendship.
Nature (Ptolemy): harmonious, because it joins signs of the same sex.
Side (as Dykes records it): the fifth sign is the left, or sinister, aspect, and the ninth sign is the right, or dexter.
Origin in the Thema Mundi (Firmicus and Bonatti, as Dykes reports it): the domicile of Jupiter.

Taurus: Capricorn and Virgo
Gemini: Aquarius and Libra
Cancer: Pisces and Scorpio
Leo: Aries and Sagittarius
Virgo: Taurus and Capricorn
Libra: Gemini and Aquarius
Scorpio: Cancer and Pisces
Sagittarius: Leo and Aries
Capricorn: Virgo and Taurus
Aquarius: Libra and Gemini
Pisces: Scorpio and Cancer

Dorotheus calls the trine mild. Firmicus and Bonatti, as Dykes reports, derive the trine from Jupiter's domicile in the Thema Mundi, the chart of the world's beginning. The signs in trine always share an element, which is why the old books group them in the four triplicities, fire, earth, air and water.
