What sets Aries apart
Aries opens the zodiac because the tropical zodiac is counted from the March equinox, the moment the Sun's apparent path crosses the equator of the sky heading north, taken as 0 degrees of Aries. Its cardinal quality is initiation: of the three fire signs it is the one that starts, where Leo holds and Sagittarius disperses. The Sun is exalted here at 19 degrees in the later tradition, while Saturn falls and Venus is in detriment in the sign opposite her own house of Libra.
- Sun enters: about 20 or 21 March, the equinox
- Span: 0 to 30 degrees of ecliptic longitude
- Exaltation: the Sun, at 19 degrees in the later tradition
- Fall and detriment: Saturn falls here; Venus is in detriment
- Ptolemy's class: a tropical sign, with Cancer, Libra and Capricorn
Often mistaken for something else: The sign is a 30-degree stretch counted from the equinox; the constellation Aries is a group of stars of uneven size that no longer lines up with the sign.
A one-minute story
The Road of the Sun
Where the twelve signs came from, and why they carry the names they do.

Aries in the traditional textbooks
Aries is where the old zodiac starts. Ptolemy begins the year here because the spring equinox opens the season of moisture, and moisture marks the start of life, so spring is infancy in his scheme. Firmicus Maternus gives its Greek name as Crios, the ram, and says equal day and night begin when the Sun enters it. He calls it masculine, fiery, four-footed and royal, and says it is weak in the eyes.
- Ruler: Mars. Ptolemy gives it to Mars because it is dry, and discordant in its distance from the houses of the luminaries. Its detriment is Venus, the ruler of Libra, the opposite sign.
- Exaltation in this sign: the Sun at 19 degrees. Fall in this sign: Saturn at 21 degrees.
- Triplicity (fire): Sun by day, Jupiter by night, Saturn as partner (Dorotheus).
- Nature (Abu Ma'shar): hot, dry, choleric; taste bitter; masculine, diurnal; spring, convertible.
- Ptolemy's class: equinoctial. On the body, its fore parts strengthen the body and its rear parts weaken it.
- Body (Abu Ma'shar): head and face.
- Wind (Firmicus): the north wind.
- Lands (Abu Ma'shar): Babylonia, Persia, Palestine, Azerbaijan.
The bounds and decans of Aries
The widest bound is Mercury's, at 8 degrees, and the narrowest bounds are Mars's and Saturn's, at 5 degrees each. Mars, the ruler of Aries, holds the bound at 21 to 25 degrees and the first decan.
Here are the Egyptian bounds of Aries, counted from 0 degrees of the sign:
- Jupiter: 1 to 6 degrees (6 wide)
- Venus: 7 to 12 degrees (6 wide)
- Mercury: 13 to 20 degrees (8 wide)
- Mars: 21 to 25 degrees (5 wide)
- Saturn: 26 to 30 degrees (5 wide)
Laid over the three decans of Firmicus Maternus and al-Qabisi, they fall like this:
- The first decan, degrees 1 to 10, belongs to Mars. The bounds inside it: Jupiter 1 to 6, Venus 7 to 10.
- The second decan, degrees 11 to 20, belongs to the Sun. The bounds inside it: Venus 11 to 12, Mercury 13 to 20.
- The third decan, degrees 21 to 30, belongs to Venus. The bounds inside it: Mars 21 to 25, Saturn 26 to 30.
The stars of Aries, and what the sources say it symbolizes
Dorotheus says an eclipse in Aries brings distress to sheep, the creatures of the sign. J. H. Hill reads the ram and then the lamb as the symbols of the Age of Aries, which he dates from about 2400 BCE to about 250 BCE, and he reads "Lamb of God" in John 1:29 as an Aries image. That is his argument and historians do not share it.
Ptolemy gave the stars of Aries these planetary natures, in the first book of the Tetrabiblos:
- head, like Mars and Saturn
- mouth, Mercury and some Saturn
- hind foot, Mars
- tail, Venus
The story behind Aries
Aries carries ram symbolism and begins the zodiacal sequence in Western tropical astrology.
The spiritual meaning of Aries

Spiritually, Aries asks what courageous first step is being requested.
Why Aries matters
Aries matters because it marks the beginning impulse in astrology: the moment life says yes before the full map is known.
How to read Aries
Astrologers reach for Aries when interpreting directness, initiative, conflict style, courage, independence, urgency, and the house where a chart begins quickly.
Aries in practice: an example
Aries on the sixth house can make work, health, and routines feel better when there is movement, autonomy, and clear challenge.
Where readings of Aries go wrong
A common error is to reduce Aries to anger. Aries can be honest, protective, innocent, and brave when well directed.
