What sets Detriment apart

A planet in detriment stands in the sign opposite one it rules, the seventh sign from its domicile. It always falls in a sign ruled by the planet that stands against it, so Mars in Libra or Taurus is in the house of Venus, Venus in Aries or Scorpio in the house of Mars, Jupiter in Gemini or Virgo in Mercury's, and the Sun in Aquarius and Saturn in Leo in each other's. The Sun and Moon have one detriment each, the five planets two.

Detriment in the traditional sources

The Arabic word is wabal, unhealthiness, and Abu Ma'shar's analogy is a man antagonistic to himself. Aquarius is listed by Abu Ma'shar with the Sun in detriment, since the Sun rules Leo opposite it.

Why the signs sit opposite

Ptolemy gives the rulerships a reason, and the detriments follow from it. The Sun and Moon rule Leo and Cancer, the northernmost and hottest signs, and Saturn takes the signs opposite them, Capricorn and Aquarius, because they are cold and wintry. So the Sun is in detriment in Aquarius, opposite Leo, and the Moon in Capricorn, opposite Cancer. Saturn is in detriment in Cancer and Leo, in the very signs he is set against.

Firmicus Maternus has the same list of domiciles and says the Sun, lord of a masculine sign, and the Moon, lord of a feminine one, share a sex with their houses.
