What sets Modality apart
Modality sorts the twelve signs into three groups of four according to where each stands in its season. The Greeks called them tropical, solid and bicorporeal, meaning turning, standing and double-bodied. Every season has one of each in a fixed order, so the cardinal sign opens it, the fixed one holds its middle and the mutable one closes it. Each of the four elements has exactly one sign of each modality.

- Mutable: closes the season, Greek bicorporeal or double-bodied
- Other names: qualities, or crosses

Often mistaken for something else: An element tells the material of a sign; a modality tells its motion. The pair is the sign's signature: for example cardinal fire is Aries and mutable fire is Sagittarius.
