Fall in the traditional sources
A planet's fall is the seventh sign from its exaltation, at the same degree. The Arabic word is hubut, a downfall, and Abu Ma'shar's analogy for a planet in fall is sorrow, prison and distress, one that hates its place. He calls the exalted sign the planet's kingdom and the fallen one its slavery.

- Venus: exalted at 27 degrees of Pisces, fall at 27 degrees of Virgo
Abu Ma'shar adds the lunar nodes: the Head of the Dragon exalted at 3 degrees of Gemini and falling in Sagittarius, the Tail exalted at 3 degrees of Sagittarius and falling in Gemini. Dykes says this is Persian and Indian lore and that he has never seen it used.

Why each planet falls where it does
Ptolemy's reasons for the exaltations explain the falls, since each fall is the opposite. The Sun is exalted where the days lengthen and falls in Libra, the opposite sign. Saturn is exalted opposite the Sun, so heat up means cold down, and he falls in Aries. Jupiter rises in the most northerly sign, Cancer, with the strongest northern breezes, and falls in Capricorn. Mars is exalted in Capricorn, the most southerly point, where fire is at its greatest intensity, and falls in Cancer.
Firmicus says a chart with most of its planets in exaltation promises great good fortune, and one with many in their falls promises misery.
