What is the Lot of Victory?
The Lot of Victory (Greek nike) is one of the seven Hermetic lots of Paulus Alexandrinus and the one paired with Jupiter. By day, measure the arc from the Lot of Spirit to Jupiter and lay it off from the Ascendant; by night, from Jupiter to Spirit.
Paulus reads it for faith, good hope, contests and associations, and for success in what a person undertakes. Read today, it is the topic of what a person trusts and where effort meets reward.
A one-minute story
The Book of the Sky
How people learned to read the sky, from Babylon to the day you were born.
The formula
Each lot is found the same way: measure the arc from the first point to the second, always forward through the signs, and lay that arc off from the Ascendant. In longitude, "from A to B" is the Ascendant plus B minus A, reduced to the circle. By night the two points swap places.
The worked example, the same invented day chart on every lot page (longitudes counted from 0 Aries in brackets): Ascendant 10 Libra (190), Sun 20 Aries (20), Moon 5 Gemini (65), Mercury 2 Aries (2), Venus 14 Taurus (44), Mars 8 Leo (128), Jupiter 25 Sagittarius (265) and Saturn 12 Capricorn (282). The Sun is above the horizon, so it is a day chart. Spirit is 145 by day and 235 by night.
- Day chart: Ascendant 190 + Jupiter 265 - Spirit 145 = 310, which is 10 degrees of Aquarius.
- Night chart: Ascendant 190 + Spirit 235 - Jupiter 265 = 160, which is 10 degrees of Virgo.
Hope, not a promise
Jupiter's lot carries the old authors' language of faith and good hope, and it is easy to turn that into a promise. The Great Almanac does not. It reads the lot's sign as the kind of undertaking where a person's trust is placed, and the lot's ruler as how well that trust is supported, and it leaves the outcome to the person and to God.
The story behind Lot of Victory
Paulus Alexandrinus gives the Lot of Victory in chapter 23 of his Introductory Matters (378), and Olympiodorus repeats it in his commentary of 564.

It is read by its sign, that sign's ruler and the condition of Jupiter.
Lot of Victory in practice: an example
In the worked example, a day chart with Spirit at 25 degrees of Leo and Jupiter at 25 degrees of Sagittarius, the Lot of Victory falls at 10 degrees of Aquarius.
