What sets Part of Fortune apart

The Part of Fortune is the Moon's distance from the Sun, measured forward and laid off from the Ascendant, so the Moon's phase is carried onto the horizon. At the New Moon, when Moon and Sun are together, the Part falls on the Ascendant, and at the Full Moon it lies on the Descendant. Its mirror is the Lot of Spirit, which reverses the formula and sits the same distance on the other side of the Ascendant.

How the Part of Fortune is found

The Part of Fortune is the distance from the Sun to the Moon, measured in zodiacal order and laid off from the ascendant. Ptolemy gives the plain form: the Sun-to-Moon distance measured from the ascendant in the order of the signs, the same by day and by night, a lunar horoscope (III.13). Dorotheus, in Book I chapter 26, reverses it for a night birth: by day, count from the Sun to the Moon and add that to the ascendant, and by night count from the Moon to the Sun.

An example with invented positions: the ascendant at 10 degrees of Libra, the Sun at 20 degrees of Aries, the Moon at 5 degrees of Gemini. By day the lot is 25 degrees of Scorpio. By night, Dorotheus's way, it is 25 degrees of Leo.

How the lot is read

Dorotheus reads the lord of the lot. If the lord is in its house, triplicity, exaltation or term, or in a strong place, it is best, and a lord that is cadent or under the Sun's rays gives little. Ptolemy says a Part of Fortune well placed means a stable estate, in his reading of the parents. In Dorotheus the relation of the Moon to the lots of Fortune and the daimon is also used for early development, the teeth and the looks.

Firmicus Maternus gives chapters to finding the place of Fortune and the place of the daimon in Book IV, but the part of the text we have only lists their titles.

The other lots in Dorotheus

Dorotheus gives formulas for several more lots in the first book of the Carmen. Count the degrees from the first point to the second, always forward in zodiacal order, and lay the arc off from the ascendant. The copy we work from, a translation through Arabic, words some night versions in a way that does not read consistently, so the forms below are the ones Vettius Valens and Paulus Alexandrinus give for the same lots.

• Father: by day, Sun to Saturn; by night, Saturn to Sun. If Saturn is under the Sun's rays, use Mars to Jupiter (I.13).
• Mother: by day, Venus to the Moon; by night, the Moon to Venus (I.14).
• Siblings (the lot of brothers): Saturn to Jupiter, the same by day and by night (I.19).
• Fortune: Sun to Moon by day, reversed by night (I.26).

He also names a lot of property and a lot of livelihood in I.27 without giving formulas.
