What sets New Moon apart
At the New Moon the Moon and Sun stand at the same zodiacal longitude, an exact conjunction that has the same time for every observer. She is not yet visible, since she travels with the Sun and rises with it. The crescent that opens a month in lunar calendars is seen a day or more later, so the astronomical New Moon and the first sighting are two different moments.

- Starts the count: each lunation is numbered from one New Moon to the next, 29.53 days on average
