What sets Waning Crescent apart
The Waning Crescent is the Moon from the last quarter to the next New Moon, 270 to 360 degrees from the Sun, under half lit and shrinking. She rises before the Sun, by about an hour for every 15 degrees she stands behind it, and is seen in the east before dawn. She is a thin sliver for the last days of the month and then lost in the Sun's light. Ptolemy calls this stretch the cold part of the cycle.

- Light: from just under half the disc to nothing
- Duration: about 7.4 days
- Position: rises in the east before the Sun, seen in the early morning

- Rudhyar: calls the last 45 degrees of the cycle the Balsamic phase
Often mistaken for something else: Waning Crescent comes before dawn and heads for the New Moon. The Waxing Crescent is the evening crescent that grows away from it.
