What sets Station Direct apart

This is the second station, where the planet stops losing degrees and begins to gain them again. The degree where it happens is the lowest point of the loop, the one the pre-shadow period first reaches. The planet leaves slowly, and only after it has climbed back past the degree of its first station does the whole episode close, which is the end of the post-shadow.

Often mistaken for something else: Station direct is the turning point. Direct Motion is the long forward run it begins, and the post-shadow is the part of that run spent re-covering old degrees.

The second station

The second station is the point where a retrograde planet stops before it moves forward again. In al-Qabisi's account of the superior planets, from the opposition to the second station the planet is western and retrograde; once it turns direct it is western and strong up to 30 degrees from the Sun, weak at 60 degrees, and western weak until it is under the rays.

In Ptolemy's phases the stretch up to the second station is dry and the stretch after it, toward disappearance, is cold.

Direct and strong

Ptolemy treats direct motion, with oriental position and swiftness, as the sign of a strong planet. Abu Ma'shar reads a retrograde planet as disobedient and turning back, and Dorotheus lists retrograde as a difficulty.
