The four kinds of victor
The almuten, in the medieval books al-mubtazz, is the victor: the planet that wins among the claimants to a point. Dykes lists four meanings in the sources. In the Greek it is the epikrator, the predominator.
- Equal-point: one point for each ruler or aspect, with no weights. Dykes says Bonatti uses mainly this kind.
- Weighted-point: domicile 5, exaltation 4, triplicity 3 and so on, the form al-Qabisi gives.
- Compound: the points of several parts of the chart summed. It comes from Ibn Ezra, and later Schoener and Lilly used it. Dykes says Bonatti does not.
- A synonym: the word is also used loosely, for example for the hyleg.
Ptolemy has the same idea without the name. To pick the ruling planet of an eclipse he chooses by house, triplicity, exaltation, terms, phase and proximity, and prefers the lord of the eclipse to the lord of the angle.

The weighted count, tested
Dykes remarks that if you score a cusp with the Dorothean triplicity lords and the Egyptian bounds, the winner is almost always the domicile or exaltation lord. That can be checked by counting. Take every degree of every sign, once as a day chart and once as a night chart, which is 720 cases, and score each with al-Qabisi's weights: the ruler 5, the exaltation lord 4, the day or night triplicity lord 3, the bound lord 2 and the decan lord 1.
- The domicile lord or the exaltation lord wins or ties in 709 of the 720 cases, which is 98.5 percent.
- There is a single winner in 610 of them, and a tie in the rest.
- The exceptions are all of the same kind, a planet that holds three of the lesser dignities at once: Cancer 8 to 10 by day (Venus with 6 points); Pisces 21 to 28 by night (Mars with 6 points).
So Dykes's remark holds, and the weighted almuten is mostly a way of confirming the ruler.
