What sets Cancer apart

Cancer is the sign of the summer solstice: the Sun reaches its northernmost point as it enters, and the line named the Tropic of Cancer takes its name from that turning. It is the only sign the Moon rules, with Leo the Sun's only sign, which is why Ptolemy's scheme starts from these two. Jupiter is exalted here at 15 degrees in the later tradition, and Mars falls. The Platonist tradition of Porphyry and Macrobius called Cancer the gate of men, where souls descend.

Often mistaken for something else: The sign takes its name from the Latin for crab; the illness named cancer comes from the same word, but the sign says nothing about it.

Cancer in the traditional textbooks

Cancer is the sign where the Sun turns, the summer solstice, and Ptolemy calls it tropical for that reason. He gives it to the Moon because it is, with Leo, the northernmost sign, nearest the zenith and hottest. Abu Ma'shar makes Jupiter exalted here at 15 degrees and Mars fallen at 28. Dorotheus lists Cancer among the signs that give many brothers when it rises.

Ruler: the Moon. Ptolemy gives it to the Moon because it is northernmost, nearest the zenith and hottest, so it goes to a luminary. Its detriment is Saturn, the ruler of Capricorn, the opposite sign.
Exaltation in this sign: Jupiter at 15 degrees. Fall in this sign: Mars at 28 degrees.
Triplicity (water): Venus by day, Mars by night, Moon as partner (Dorotheus).
Nature (Abu Ma'shar): cold, moist, phlegmatic; taste salty; feminine, nocturnal; spring to summer, convertible.
Ptolemy's class: tropical. On the body, it tends to shrink the body.
Body (Abu Ma'shar): breasts, heart, stomach, sides, spleen, lungs.
Wind (Firmicus): the west wind.
Lands (Abu Ma'shar): Lesser Armenia, eastern Khurasan, China, Marw al-Rud.

The bounds and decans of Cancer

The widest bounds are Mars's and Jupiter's, at 7 degrees each, and the narrowest bound is Saturn's, at 4 degrees. The Moon rules Cancer but takes no bound, since the Sun and Moon have none. It does hold the third decan.

Laid over the three decans of Firmicus Maternus and al-Qabisi, they fall like this:

The first decan, degrees 1 to 10, belongs to Venus. The bounds inside it: Mars 1 to 7, Venus 8 to 10.
The second decan, degrees 11 to 20, belongs to Mercury. The bounds inside it: Venus 11 to 13, Mercury 14 to 19, Jupiter at 20.
The third decan, degrees 21 to 30, belongs to the Moon. The bounds inside it: Jupiter 21 to 26, Saturn 27 to 30.

The stars of Cancer, and what the sources say it symbolizes

Hill places the feast of the Assumption on 15 August and says it falls when the Sun is in Virgo, "when the summer solstice was in Cancer". Dorotheus lists Cancer among the fertile signs, with Scorpio and Pisces. Firmicus puts it in the west wind.

Ptolemy gave the stars of Cancer these planetary natures, in the first book of the Tetrabiblos:

the eyes, Mercury and some Mars
the claws, Saturn and Mercury
the Praesepe nebula, Mars and the Moon
the two Asini, Mars and the Sun
