What sets Leading Planet apart
The leading planet is defined by direction and gap: find the largest empty stretch of the zodiac, then take the first planet met after it in the order of the signs. Jones used it for the Locomotive, Bowl and Bundle shapes, where the planets sit in one arc. As the sky turns, that planet is the first of the group to cross the eastern horizon, which is the older image of leading.
- Step one: find the largest empty stretch between planets
- Step two: take the first planet after the gap in the order of the signs, Aries toward Pisces
- Shapes used in: Bundle, Bowl and Locomotive, which have one occupied arc
- Not used in: Splash, which has no single gap, nor Seesaw, which has two
- Source: Marc Edmund Jones, 1941, the shape typology
Often mistaken for something else: The leading planet is picked by its place after a gap, while the Chart ruler is picked by rulership of the rising sign. They can be the same planet but are found in different ways.
