The stem, the branch and the new moon
In the Chinese calendar each year carries one of twelve animals and one of five elements, paired in a sixty-year cycle of heavenly stems and earthly branches. 2027’s pair is 丁未: the stem 丁, yin fire, with the branch 未, the Goat. The Goat’s own fixed element is Earth, so the year joins Fire to Earth.
The New Year falls on the new moon that appears between 21 January and 20 February, as Wikipedia puts it, usually the second new moon after the winter solstice. By the Almanac’s lunation series that new moon comes at 15:56 UTC on 6 February, which is 23:56 the same day on Beijing’s clock, four minutes before midnight, and it is the second new moon after the Sun reached the winter solstice on 21 December 2026.
