2027 for the Ox

In the year of the Fire Goat, which begins on 6 February 2027, the Ox and the Goat form one of the Six Offending Groups (Liu Chong, 六冲), the grid’s worst match. In the generative cycle Fire produces Earth, so practitioners read a Fire year as one that feeds the Ox’s Earth: support arriving, sometimes faster than it can be used.

The Ox in a Goat year

The grid sets the Ox opposite the Goat, one of the six offending pairs, and practitioners read the year that follows as one of clashing temperaments: the Ox’s firmness against the Goat’s softness. The counsel is not to dread it but to bend a little more than an Ox likes, and to choose carefully which disagreements deserve a stand.

Love and work for the Ox in 2027

In love the clash of the Ox and the Goat is read as a pull between firmness and feeling, and the counsel is to listen for what a partner needs before defending what you have built.

At work the Ox’s steadiness is still its strength, and practitioners read the year as better for maintaining and finishing than for forcing new ground against resistance.

The five kinds of Ox in a Fire year

Each Ox year also carries an element of its own, from the year’s heavenly stem, so there are five kinds of Ox, and practitioners read each one against 2027’s Fire by its birth element.

A Wood Ox, born in 1925 or 1985, carries the element that feeds Fire, and practitioners read the Fire year as one that draws on it: a good season for kindling other people’s plans, and a reason to guard its own reserves.

A Fire Ox, born in 1937 or 1997, shares the year’s own element, which practitioners read as strong momentum: easy to begin things, harder to rest, with a temper to watch.

An Earth Ox, born in 1949 or 2009, is fed by the year, since Fire produces Earth, and practitioners read support and steadiness for it, with the caution not to take on too much simply because it comes easily.

A Metal Ox, born in 1961 or 2021, meets the element that melts Metal, which practitioners read as a refining year: pressure that shapes, best met with patience.

A Water Ox, born in 1973, carries the element that dampens Fire, and practitioners read the year as one it can steady for others, at some cost to its own warmth.

The Ox in the tradition

Folk tradition gives the Ox patience, strength and a steady capacity for work, the animal that carries the load without complaint. Its branch is 丑.

In the traditional tables the Ox is yin, belongs to the 2nd trine and has Earth as its fixed element. Its best matches in the grid are the Snake and Rooster (its trine) and the Rat (its harmony); its offending opposite is the Goat, and its harming pair the Horse.

Earth meets Fire

Fire is the element of 2027’s stem 丁, yin fire, and Earth is the Ox’s own, so for the Ox the year is read as Earth meeting Fire.

The cycles are the ones Wikipedia’s article on the five elements gives: Wood feeds Fire, Fire produces Earth, Earth bears Metal, Metal collects Water and Water nourishes Wood, while Water dampens Fire and Fire melts Metal.

Common questions

Is 2027 a good year for the Ox?

The tradition promises the Ox neither a good year nor a bad one. By the compatibility grid the Ox and the Goat form one of the Six Offending Groups (Liu Chong, 六冲), the grid’s worst match, and by the elements the Ox’s Earth meets the year’s Fire; practitioners read the Ox’s year through both, as a season to reflect on rather than a verdict.

What are the Ox years?

In the table from 1924 to 2043: 1925, 1937, 1949, 1961, 1973, 1985, 1997, 2009, 2021 and 2033. Each Ox year begins at that year’s Chinese New Year, not on 1 January.

When does the Ox’s next year come?

On 31 January 2033, a Water Ox year.
