2027 for the Dragon

In the year of the Fire Goat, which begins on 6 February 2027, the Dragon and the Goat are an average match, friendly in the traditional grid. In the generative cycle Fire produces Earth, so practitioners read a Fire year as one that feeds the Dragon’s Earth: support arriving, sometimes faster than it can be used.

The Dragon in a Goat year

The grid lists the Dragon and the Goat as an average, friendly match, and practitioners read the year as neutral ground: the Dragon’s ambitions neither helped nor hindered by the year’s animal, and best served by patience with people who move more slowly.

Love and work for the Dragon in 2027

In love the Dragon’s large presence is best softened in a gentle year, and practitioners counsel attention to the small kindnesses a partner notices more than grand gestures.

At work the Dragon’s ambition meets neutral ground, so the reading favors one well-chosen goal pursued steadily over many begun at once.

The five kinds of Dragon in a Fire year

Each Dragon year also carries an element of its own, from the year’s heavenly stem, so there are five kinds of Dragon, and practitioners read each one against 2027’s Fire by its birth element.

An Earth Dragon, born in 1928 or 1988, is fed by the year, since Fire produces Earth, and practitioners read support and steadiness for it, with the caution not to take on too much simply because it comes easily.

A Metal Dragon, born in 1940 or 2000, meets the element that melts Metal, which practitioners read as a refining year: pressure that shapes, best met with patience.

A Water Dragon, born in 1952 or 2012, carries the element that dampens Fire, and practitioners read the year as one it can steady for others, at some cost to its own warmth.

A Wood Dragon, born in 1964 or 2024, carries the element that feeds Fire, and practitioners read the Fire year as one that draws on it: a good season for kindling other people’s plans, and a reason to guard its own reserves.

A Fire Dragon, born in 1976, shares the year’s own element, which practitioners read as strong momentum: easy to begin things, harder to rest, with a temper to watch.

The Dragon in the tradition

Folk tradition gives the Dragon vitality, ambition and a large presence, the only mythical animal of the twelve. Its branch is 辰.

In the traditional tables the Dragon is yang, belongs to the 1st trine and has Earth as its fixed element. Its best matches in the grid are the Rat and Monkey (its trine) and the Rooster (its harmony); its offending opposite is the Dog, and its harming pair the Rabbit.

Earth meets Fire

Fire is the element of 2027’s stem 丁, yin fire, and Earth is the Dragon’s own, so for the Dragon the year is read as Earth meeting Fire.

The cycles are the ones Wikipedia’s article on the five elements gives: Wood feeds Fire, Fire produces Earth, Earth bears Metal, Metal collects Water and Water nourishes Wood, while Water dampens Fire and Fire melts Metal.

Common questions

Is 2027 a good year for the Dragon?

The tradition promises the Dragon neither a good year nor a bad one. By the compatibility grid the Dragon and the Goat are an average match, friendly in the traditional grid, and by the elements the Dragon’s Earth meets the year’s Fire; practitioners read the Dragon’s year through both, as a season to reflect on rather than a verdict.

What are the Dragon years?

In the table from 1924 to 2043: 1928, 1940, 1952, 1964, 1976, 1988, 2000, 2012, 2024 and 2036. Each Dragon year begins at that year’s Chinese New Year, not on 1 January.

When does the Dragon’s next year come?

On 28 January 2036, a Fire Dragon year.
