What the Soul Urge number is
The Soul Urge, also called the Heart's Desire, is the number of what you want most: the motive under the choices. It is drawn from the vowels of your full birth name, the "breath" of the name, because vowels are the sounds made with an open voice.

How to calculate it
Write your full birth name, take only the vowels (A, E, I, O and U; the Almanac counts Y as a consonant), give each its value from the letter chart, add them, and reduce, keeping 11, 22 and 33. For JOHN SMITH the vowels are O (6) and I (9): 6 + 9 = 15, then 1 + 5 = 6, a Soul Urge 6.

The Music of Number
From a blacksmith's hammers to your Life Path: the story of number.

How it fits with your other numbers
The Soul Urge is what you want; the Expression number, from every letter of the name, is what you are equipped to do; the Personality number, from the consonants, is how you come across. JOHN SMITH's consonants add to 29, then 11, a master Personality number, and all his letters to 44, then 8.

Common questions
How do I calculate my Soul Urge number?
Add the values of the vowels (A, E, I, O, U) in your full birth name and reduce, keeping 11, 22 and 33. JOHN SMITH: O 6 + I 9 = 15, then 6.
Is Y a vowel in the Soul Urge number?
Numerologists disagree. Some count Y as a vowel when it sounds like one (as in Lynn); the Almanac's calculator always counts it as a consonant.
Is the Soul Urge the same as the Heart's Desire number?
Yes, two names for the same number, taken from the vowels of the birth name.
Which name do I use?
The full name on your birth certificate. A married name or nickname can be read as a second, later layer.
