What does the number 3 mean in the Bible?
Three marks what is complete and confirmed. The seraphim cry "Holy, holy, holy, is the LORD of hosts" (Isaiah 6:3), baptism is "in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost" (Matthew 28:19), and Paul closes his hymn to love with "faith, hope, charity, these three" (1 Corinthians 13:13).
Above all, three is the number of the resurrection. Jesus named Jonah's "three days and three nights" as the sign of his own death and rising (Matthew 12:40), and the creed Paul received says "he rose again the third day according to the scriptures" (1 Corinthians 15:4).

The prophetic meaning of 3
Bullinger (1894) called three the number of divine perfection, and gave a geometer's reason: two straight lines cannot enclose a space, but three make the first complete figure. Prophetic readers use three for a thing made whole and for resurrection after waiting: "after two days will he revive us: in the third day he will raise us up" (Hosea 6:2).
The word Trinity is not in the Bible, and three alone does not prove the doctrine; the doctrine rests on the whole of Scripture, not on a count.
Three in Hebrew and Greek letters
In Hebrew the numeral three is gimel (ג), whose name means camel; in Greek it is gamma (γ).
The hidden lore of three
The Bible never says there were three wise men. Matthew counts only their gifts, gold, frankincense and myrrh (Matthew 2:11), and the tradition of three kings grew from the three gifts.
The three visitors who came to Abraham at Mamre (Genesis 18) became, for Christian painters, a picture of the Trinity; Andrei Rublev's icon of the fifteenth century is the famous example.
