What sets Gematria apart
In Hebrew the letters double as numbers: aleph to yod are 1 to 10, kaf to qof are 20 to 100, resh, shin and tav are 200, 300 and 400. Gematria sums the values of a word and compares it with other words of the same total. The word itself is thought to come from Greek geometria. Alongside the standard value (mispar hechrachi) there are reduced, ordinal and final-letter systems.

- Chai: life, chet 8 + yod 10 = 18; hence gifts in multiples of 18 in Jewish custom
- Eliezer: 1 + 30 + 10 + 70 + 7 + 200 = 318, the number of Abraham's men in Genesis 14:14 (Talmud, Nedarim 32a)
- Methods: standard (hechrachi), large (gadol), reduced (katan), ordinal (siduri)
- Greek parallel: isopsephy, with the number of the beast in Revelation 13:18 read in that way by some
Often mistaken for something else: Western numerology gives A to Z the values 1 to 9; gematria uses fixed Hebrew values and is a method of reading Hebrew texts.
