Biblical Meaning of Number 2
In the Bible, two is the number of witness and of division: "In the mouth of two or three witnesses shall every word be established" (2 Corinthians 13:1), and on the second day of creation God divides the waters.

What does the number 2 mean in the Bible?
Two carries two ideas that belong together. It is the number of witness: the Law settles a matter "at the mouth of two witnesses, or at the mouth of three" (Deuteronomy 19:15), the covenant is written on "two tables of testimony" (Exodus 31:18), and Jesus sends his disciples out "by two and two" (Mark 6:7).
It is also the number of division. On the second day God divides the waters above from the waters below (Genesis 1:6-8), and that is the only day of creation the Hebrew text does not call good.

The Music of Number
From a blacksmith's hammers to your Life Path: the story of number.

The prophetic meaning of 2
Bullinger (1894) read two as the number of difference: what is two is no longer one, whether it stands in opposition, like light and darkness, or in agreement, like two witnesses. That is the root of the prophetic use of two for confirmation. A word given twice is settled, as Joseph told Pharaoh: the dream was doubled "because the thing is established by God, and God will shortly bring it to pass" (Genesis 41:32).
Two is not a bad number in Scripture: the same count gives the ark its pairs and the Gospel its messengers.
Two in Hebrew and Greek letters
In Hebrew the numeral two is bet (ב), whose name means house; in Greek it is beta (β). Bet is the first letter of the whole Bible: bereshit, "In the beginning" (Genesis 1:1).
The hidden lore of two
Why does Scripture begin with the second letter? The rabbis answered in Genesis Rabbah (1:10): bet is closed above, below and behind and open only forward, so the reader may not ask what lies above, below or before creation, only what came after it.
The missing "it was good" on the second day was noticed early. Genesis Rabbah (4:6) explains that division was made that day and not finished until the third, which is why the third day is called good twice.

Common questions
What does the number 2 mean in the Bible?
Witness and division: the testimony of two witnesses (Deuteronomy 19:15), the two tables of the covenant (Exodus 31:18), and the division of the waters on the second day (Genesis 1:6-8).
What is the prophetic meaning of the number 2?
Confirmation. A matter given twice is established, as Joseph told Pharaoh (Genesis 41:32); Bullinger read two as the number of difference, for opposition or for agreement.
Why is the second day of creation not called good?
The Hebrew text of Genesis 1 omits "it was good" on day two only. The rabbis explained that the division of the waters begun that day was completed on the third, which is called good twice (Genesis Rabbah 4:6).
