How the calculation works
Reduce each part of your birth date on its own. The month and the day are reduced by adding their digits; the year is reduced by adding its four digits and continuing until one digit remains. Any part that lands on 11, 22, or 33 is kept whole as a master number. Then add the three results and reduce once more, again keeping 11, 22, or 33. For example, someone born on July 14, 1995 has month 7, day 1 + 4 = 5, and year 1 + 9 + 9 + 5 = 24, then 2 + 4 = 6; adding 7 + 5 + 6 = 18, then 1 + 8 = 9: a life path 9.
An aside on other traditions: some numerologists add every digit of the date in one pass instead. The root digit always comes out the same, but the two routes can disagree about master numbers. For example, January 2, 1990 gives month 1 + day 2 + year 1 (1 + 9 + 9 + 0 = 19, then 10, then 1) = 4 on this calculator, while the one-pass sum 0 + 1 + 0 + 2 + 1 + 9 + 9 + 0 = 22 would call it a master 22. Common questions
Do I need my birth time?
No. The life path comes from your birth month, day, and year alone, so the time of day never enters the calculation. Birth time matters for cusp-day Sun signs, rising signs, and a complete natal chart.
What is a life path number?
It is your birth month, birth day, and birth year, each reduced on its own, then added and reduced once more to a number from 1 to 9 or kept as the master numbers 11, 22, or 33. Numerology reads it as the core theme your life keeps returning to.
Why did I get a master number?
If the total of the reduced month, day and year is 11, 22 or 33, or reduces to one of them on the way down (29 becomes 11, for example), the Almanac keeps it as a master number: a higher-voltage version of the 2, 4, or 6 path. A month, day, or year that reduces to 11, 22, or 33 is also kept whole before the three are added, which is why a one-pass calculator elsewhere can give a different answer.
