What does the number 12 mean in the Bible?

Twelve is the number of a people gathered and governed. "All these are the twelve tribes of Israel" (Genesis 49:28); Jesus chooses twelve apostles (Matthew 10:2) and promises they will sit "upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel" (Matthew 19:28).

The last chapters of the Bible are built on it: the New Jerusalem has twelve gates, twelve angels and twelve foundations bearing the apostles' names (Revelation 21:12-14), and the tree of life bears "twelve manner of fruits, and yielded her fruit every month" (Revelation 22:2).

A one-minute story

The Music of Number

From a blacksmith's hammers to your Life Path: the story of number.

Pythagoras heard harmony in a blacksmith's hammers.

The prophetic meaning of 12

Bullinger (1894) called twelve the number of governmental perfection: God's rule made visible among a people. Prophetic readers carry it into the Revelation's 144,000, twelve times twelve times a thousand (Revelation 7:4), and the wall of 144 cubits (Revelation 21:17).

Twelve in Scripture is about a people gathered by God; the zodiac reading is Josephus's, not a statement of the text.

Twelve in Hebrew and Greek letters

Hebrew and Greek wrote twelve as ten plus two: yod-bet (יב) and iota-beta (ιβ).

The hidden lore of twelve

In the first century Josephus read the twelve stones of the high priest's breastplate as the twelve months, or as the twelve signs of the circle "which the Greeks call the Zodiac" (Antiquities 3.186).

The woman of Revelation 12 stands in the sky itself, "clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet", crowned with twelve stars: the one scene in Scripture set among the constellations.

Sources and editorial method

Research and editorial references used for this page include:

Scripture is quoted from the King James Version. The "prophetic" meanings are E. W. Bullinger's (Number in Scripture, 1894), named as his reading rather than as definitions the Bible gives; the Hebrew and Greek numerals are the standard letter values, and the later Jewish and Christian lore is given with its source.

What does the number 12 mean in the Bible?

God's people and God's order: the twelve tribes (Genesis 49:28), the twelve apostles (Matthew 10:2), and the twelve gates and foundations of the New Jerusalem (Revelation 21:12-14).

Governmental perfection, in Bullinger's reading: God's rule among a people, carried into the 144,000 of Revelation 7:4, twelve times twelve times a thousand.
