What does the number 6 mean in the Bible?

Six is the number of humanity and its work. Man and woman are made on the sixth day (Genesis 1:26-31), and the commandment gives six days to labor before the seventh day's rest: "Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work" (Exodus 20:9).

It is also the number of man at his proudest. Goliath stands "six cubits and a span" with a spearhead of "six hundred shekels of iron" (1 Samuel 17:4-7), Nebuchadnezzar's golden image is sixty cubits high and six broad (Daniel 3:1), and the beast's number is "Six hundred threescore and six" (Revelation 13:18).

The Music of Number

The prophetic meaning of 6

Bullinger (1894) called six the number of man: human labor, and human effort that stops one short of God's seven. Prophetic readers use it for what people build without God, and read 666 as that shortfall said three times.

Six is not evil in itself: the sixth day is the day God called "very good" (Genesis 1:31).

Six in Hebrew and Greek letters

In Hebrew the numeral six is vav (ו), whose name means hook: the same word names the hooks of the tabernacle (Exodus 26:32). In Greek the numeral six was an old letter dropped from the alphabet, digamma (ϝ), later written stigma (ϛ).

The hidden lore of six

Some early copies of Revelation read 616, not 666. Irenaeus already knew of the variant around 180 (Against Heresies 5.30.1), and the oldest surviving fragment of the passage, Papyrus 115, has 616.

Many scholars think the number spells a name: Nero Caesar in Hebrew letters (נרון קסר) adds up to 666, and spelled the Latin way, without the final n (נרו קסר), to 616, which would explain both readings.

In arithmetic, 666 is the sum of every number from 1 to 36, and 36 is six times six.

Scripture is quoted from the King James Version. The "prophetic" meanings are E. W. Bullinger's (Number in Scripture, 1894), named as his reading rather than as definitions the Bible gives; the Hebrew and Greek numerals are the standard letter values, and the later Jewish and Christian lore is given with its source.
