Biblical Meaning of Number 7

In the Bible, seven is the number of completion and of the holy: God rested on the seventh day and blessed it, and the Revelation is built of sevens, churches, seals, trumpets and vials.

What does the number 7 mean in the Bible?

Seven is the number of the finished and the sacred. "On the seventh day God ended his work… And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it" (Genesis 2:2-3). Jericho falls after seven priests with seven trumpets circle it seven days, seven times on the seventh (Joshua 6:4), and Naaman is healed when he dips "seven times in Jordan" (2 Kings 5:14).

The same number governs time: the sabbath every seventh day, a sabbath year every seventh year (Leviticus 25:4), and a jubilee after "seven sabbaths of years" (Leviticus 25:8). Jesus stretches it past counting: forgive "Until seventy times seven" (Matthew 18:22).

A one-minute story

The Music of Number

From a blacksmith's hammers to your Life Path: the story of number.

Pythagoras heard harmony in a blacksmith's hammers.

The prophetic meaning of 7

Bullinger (1894) called seven the number of spiritual perfection. Prophetic readers use it for the fullness of God's timing, the week, the sabbatical year and the jubilee, and for the sevens of the Revelation, which read as God's judgments carried through to the end.

Seven is not a charm: Naaman was healed by the word of the prophet, not by the count of his dips.

Seven in Hebrew and Greek letters

In Hebrew the numeral seven is zayin (ז); in Greek it is zeta (ζ). The Hebrew word for seven, sheva, shares its root with the word for an oath: to swear is, literally, "to seven oneself", which is why Abraham's oath at Beersheba is sealed with seven lambs (Genesis 21:28-31).

The hidden lore of seven

The golden lampstand of the tabernacle holds seven lamps (Exodus 25:37), and in the first century Josephus read them as the seven planets the ancients could see.

In the Revelation, the risen Christ holds "seven stars" in his right hand (Revelation 1:16), and the text itself interprets them: "the seven stars are the angels of the seven churches" (1:20).

Sources and editorial method

Scripture is quoted from the King James Version. The "prophetic" meanings are E. W. Bullinger's (Number in Scripture, 1894), named as his reading rather than as definitions the Bible gives; the Hebrew and Greek numerals are the standard letter values, and the later Jewish and Christian lore is given with its source.

Common questions

What does the number 7 mean in the Bible?

Completion and holiness: God rested on the seventh day and blessed it (Genesis 2:2-3), and the Revelation is ordered in sevens.

What is the prophetic meaning of the number 7?

The fullness of God's time. Bullinger called seven spiritual perfection, and prophetic readers link it to the sabbath, the sabbatical year and the jubilee (Leviticus 25).

Why is seven called God's number?

Because it closes the week of creation with a blessing (Genesis 2:3), and because in Hebrew the word for seven and the word for a sworn oath share one root.

What are the seven stars in Revelation?

Revelation explains them itself: "The seven stars are the angels of the seven churches" (Revelation 1:20).
