What does the number 8 mean in the Bible?
Eight is one past the week, the first day of a new one. In the ark "few, that is, eight souls were saved by water" (1 Peter 3:20); the covenant sign is given on the eighth day of a boy's life (Genesis 17:12); the feast of Tabernacles closes with an eighth day of holy assembly (Leviticus 23:36).
The resurrection fell on the first day of the week, the day after the seventh, and early Christians called it the eighth day: "we keep the eighth day for rejoicing, in which also Jesus rose from the dead" (Epistle of Barnabas 15:9).

A one-minute story
The Music of Number
From a blacksmith's hammers to your Life Path: the story of number.

The prophetic meaning of 8
Bullinger (1894) called eight the number of resurrection and regeneration, a new beginning after a completed seven: the musical octave starts the scale again on its eighth note. Prophetic readers use it for new starts that follow an ending, which is why many early baptisteries were built with eight sides.
Eight is not the Bible's money number: its link with wealth comes from Chinese, where the word for eight sounds like the word for prosperity, and from modern numerology.
Eight in Hebrew and Greek letters
In Hebrew the numeral eight is chet (ח); in Greek it is eta (η).
The hidden lore of eight
Written in Greek letters, the name Jesus, Iēsous (Ἰησοῦς), adds up to 888: iota 10, eta 8, sigma 200, omicron 70, upsilon 400, sigma 200. The Sibylline Oracles already pointed to this number.
The feast John calls "the feast of the dedication" (John 10:22), Hanukkah, lasts eight days, after the eight-day rededication of the altar in 1 Maccabees 4:56.
