What does the number 10 mean in the Bible?
Ten completes a count. Moses "wrote upon the tables the words of the covenant, the ten commandments" (Exodus 34:28); ten plagues fall on Egypt before Pharaoh lets Israel go (Exodus 7-12); ten generations run from Adam to Noah (Genesis 5) and ten more from Shem to Abram (Genesis 11).
It is also the number of testing and of giving back. Daniel asks, "Prove thy servants, I beseech thee, ten days" (Daniel 1:12); the church at Smyrna is told, "ye shall have tribulation ten days" (Revelation 2:10); and Abram gives Melchizedek "tithes of all", a tenth (Genesis 14:20).

The prophetic meaning of 10
Bullinger (1894) called ten the number of ordinal perfection: after nine digits the count is complete and a new order begins. Prophetic readers use it for testing that proves what is real (Daniel 1:12; Revelation 2:10) and for the tithe, the tenth that acknowledges the whole belongs to God.
Ten is not the number of the law alone: the one leper out of ten who came back is the one Jesus praised (Luke 17:15-19).
Ten in Hebrew and Greek letters
In Hebrew the numeral ten is yod (י), the smallest letter, whose name means hand; in Greek it is iota (ι). Yod is the "jot" of Jesus' saying, "one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law" (Matthew 5:18), and it is the first letter of the divine name YHWH.
The hidden lore of ten
"With ten utterances the world was created," says the Mishnah (Avot 5:1). Genesis 1 has nine "And God said"; the Talmud counts "In the beginning" as the tenth (Rosh Hashanah 32a).
The Kabbalists counted ten sefirot, the powers through which the Infinite made the world. Their oldest book, Sefer Yetzirah, insists: "ten and not nine, ten and not eleven."
