The triplicity lords, as Dorotheus gave them
Each element has three lords: one by day, one by night and one who shares in both. The standard set is the one given by Dorotheus of Sidon in the first century and repeated by al-Qabisi:
- Fire (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius): Sun by day, Jupiter by night, Saturn the partner
- Earth (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn): Venus by day, Moon by night, Mars the partner (al-Qabisi adds that Mercury shares in Virgo)
- Air (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius): Saturn by day, Mercury by night, Jupiter the partner
- Water (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces): Venus by day, Mars by night, Moon the partner
A chart is a day chart when the Sun is above the horizon and a night chart when it is below, so the same sign can have a different lord depending on the hour of birth.

Why a planet can be lord by day and not by night
The lords do not map neatly onto the two sect teams. Venus, a night planet, rules the earth triplicity by day, and Jupiter, a day planet, rules fire by night. What the two lists share is the idea that the hour of birth decides which lord leads, because the Sun's position above or below the horizon is the oldest test of whether a chart belongs to the day or the night.
Ptolemy, in Book I of the Tetrabiblos, gives the lords with reasons drawn from the sun's path, the seasons and distance. His fire, earth and air triplicities match the standard set: Sun and Jupiter, Venus and Moon, Saturn and Mercury. His water triplicity, in the translation we checked, joins Mars to the Moon and Venus, and that is the place where the traditions split most. If a page quotes a water lord it should say whose.
Why three lords instead of two
Dorotheus names three lords for each element and the third is called the partner or participant. The first two take turns by day and night. The partner takes a share whatever the hour.
The best-known use is in survival and prosperity readings. Dorotheus checks whether the three triplicity lords of the Ascendant sit in strong places, and his rule for fortune gives the Sun and its triplicity lords to day births and the Moon and its lords to night births. If both the first and second lord are well placed, he says, prosperity lasts a lifetime; if only one is, he reads a rise followed by a fall, or the reverse.
How much weight triplicity carries
In al-Qabisi's five-part scale, triplicity is worth 3 points, between exaltation (4) and bound (2). Al-Qabisi compares a planet in its own triplicity to a person among allies and under-officials, not at home in their own house.
Dykes notes that if you score a house cusp with the Dorothean lords and the Egyptian bounds, the winner is almost always the domicile or exaltation lord. So triplicity usually decides little unless those two are absent.
