Preparation guide

Spiritual Preparation

In the parable of the ten virgins, the wise were not the ones who guessed the hour. They were the ones who had oil in their lamps. This is the preparation no one can borrow from someone else at the last minute.

Facts checked October 2026. No dates set: "of that day and hour knoweth no man" (Matthew 24:36).

Watch ye therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of man.

Luke 21:36, KJV

Why this matters

In the parable of the ten virgins (Matthew 25:1-13), all ten were waiting for the bridegroom and all ten fell asleep. The difference was oil. When the cry came at midnight, the foolish could not borrow it from the wise. A living faith cannot be borrowed at the last minute either.

Spiritual preparation is not knowing more about the beast than anyone else. It is knowing Christ: trusting him, turning from sin, praying, reading his word, belonging to his people, and holding a hope that does not panic.

Wisdom for the way

Deception is the first sign

Jesus's first words about the end were "Take heed that no man deceive you" (Matthew 24:4). The best protection against false christs is knowing the true one well.

Watching is not guessing

The servants Jesus praised were not the ones who predicted the hour. They were the ones found faithfully at work when the master came (Matthew 24:45-46).

Hope, not dread

"Look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh" (Luke 21:28). The day believers watch for is the day they have longed for.

Common questions

How do I know if I am ready?

Readiness is not a feeling; it is a relationship. If you have turned to Christ and trust him, you belong to him whenever he comes (John 6:37). Keep your lamp trimmed through daily prayer, Scripture and obedience, and leave the hour with him.

How do I recognize a false prophet?

Jesus said, "Ye shall know them by their fruits" (Matthew 7:16). Warning signs include setting dates, adding to Scripture, demanding money or secrecy, stirring up fear, and pointing to themselves rather than to Christ.

Can I pray with the Almanac?

Yes. The Prayer Companion helps you put a prayer into words for any day and any burden, and keeps nothing you write.
