Revelation 13:16-18

The Mark of the Beast

A mark in the right hand or the forehead, without which no one may buy or sell. For centuries readers could only guess what it might be. Now chips go under the skin of the hand and into the brain, and many believers think the mark is close. Here is what Scripture says, what the chips really are, and how to be ready.

And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads: And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.

Revelation 13:16-17, KJV

What Revelation says

The mark appears in six passages of Revelation. Read together, they say more than any single verse.

  • Revelation 13:16-17The mark is given to all, "both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond", "in their right hand, or in their foreheads", and without it "no man might buy or sell".
  • Revelation 13:18"Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six."
  • Revelation 14:9-11An angel warns with a loud voice: "If any man worship the beast and his image, and receive his mark in his forehead, or in his hand", he shall drink of the wrath of God.
  • Revelation 15:2The faithful stand on the sea of glass, "them that had gotten the victory over the beast, and over his image, and over his mark, and over the number of his name".
  • Revelation 16:2; 19:20A grievous sore falls on those "which had the mark of the beast", and the false prophet is judged for the miracles "with which he deceived them that had received the mark".
  • Revelation 20:4Those who had not worshipped the beast, "neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands", "lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years".

A mark, a market, a worship

A mark

The Greek word is charagma: a stamp or seal, like the emperor's seal pressed onto a bill of sale. It is placed "in their right hand, or in their foreheads" (13:16).

A market

It decides who may trade: "that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark" (13:17). It is an economic gate.

A worship

It belongs to the beast and his image: "If any man worship the beast and his image, and receive his mark" (14:9). It is a pledge of allegiance.

All three together make the mark. A seal without worship is not yet the mark; worship of the beast without a seal is already the sin the mark seals.

Will the mark be a chip?

It is the question most people ask now, and for good reason. For the first time in history, the mark Revelation describes could be made literally: a chip in the right hand or in the head, linked to your money and your identity.

Many believers now expect the mark to be a chip of exactly this kind, and some point to Neuralink by name. If they are right, the technology is ready. What Scripture says must come with it, a ruler who demands worship and decides who may buy or sell, has not yet taken the world's stage.

to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheadsRevelation 13:16

What already exists

In the hand

Payment chips placed under the skin of the hand pay at any contactless terminal, and identity chips have been injected since the 1990s. Thousands of people carry one today.

In the brain

Neuralink's implant is set into the skull by a surgical robot, with fine threads reaching into the brain. About twenty people had one by early 2026, in clinical trials. Elon Musk said in 2019: "Ultimately we can achieve a symbiosis with artificial intelligence."

In the system

Digital currencies and digital identity wallets are being built by governments around the world. A chip is only a key; these are the doors it would open.

The case many believers make

The right hand and the forehead

Payment chips go in the hand; brain chips sit in the skull. Revelation names exactly those two places (13:16).

Buying and selling

A hand chip already pays at the till. Join it to a digital currency and a digital identity, and no one could buy or sell without it (13:17).

Small and great, rich and poor

The mark is given to everyone (13:16). Chips are now cheap enough to give to everyone.

Man joined to machine

The beast's image is given power to speak (13:15). A chip that joins the mind to artificial intelligence is the closest thing the world has yet built to that picture.

What Scripture adds

It is a mark of worship

Revelation 14:9 joins the mark to worshipping the beast and his image. A chip becomes the mark when it is a pledge of allegiance to the beast's rule, not before.

No one takes it by accident

Those who receive it choose it, and those who refuse it pay a price (13:15; 20:4). God does not condemn anyone for a chip they did not know about.

Judge the system, not the sick

Neuralink today helps paralyzed people use a computer. A man moving a cursor by thought is not worshipping the beast. What believers watch is the system the chip could be joined to.

Every age had its candidate

Caesar's incense, the barcode, the credit card and the vaccine were each called the mark. The mark will come with the beast. Until then, watch the trend without panic.

Whose is this image and superscription?Matthew 22:20
  1. About AD 112

    Incense to Caesar's image

The Roman governor Pliny wrote to the emperor Trajan that he made suspected Christians offer incense and wine before the emperor's image and curse Christ, and executed those who refused. For John's first readers, worshipping a ruler's image to stay alive was not a theory.

  2. 1500s

    Pope and Reformer

Reformers saw the beast in the papacy; their opponents answered by finding 666 in Martin Luther's name. Each side read the other into Revelation 13.

  3. 1800s to 1900s

    Rulers by name

Napoleon, the Kaiser, Hitler and many others had their names counted to 666 by somebody, and all of them passed.

  4. 1970s to 1980s

    Cards and barcodes

Credit cards, government ID numbers and the product barcode, first scanned at a till in 1974, were each called the mark. Popular books claimed that the barcode's three long bars spelled 666.

  5. 1998 to 2004

    The first implants

A British professor, Kevin Warwick, had a radio chip implanted in his arm in 1998, and in 2004 the US Food and Drug Administration cleared the VeriChip, a chip injected under the skin to identify patients. The mark moved from a picture to a possibility.

  6. 2017 to 2018

Chips at work and on the train

A Wisconsin company, Three Square Market, offered its staff chips in the hand to open doors and buy snacks, and about fifty volunteered. In Sweden several thousand people carried chips in their hands for keys and train tickets.

  7. 2020 to 2021

    Vaccine passes

Some believers feared that COVID-19 vaccines, or the passes that recorded them, were the mark.

  8. 2021

    Paying with the hand

Walletmor began selling a payment chip that goes under the skin of the hand and pays at any contactless terminal.

  9. 2024 to 2026

    Chips in the brain

Neuralink implanted its first brain chip in a human in January 2024, and about twenty by early 2026, most of them people with paralysis, who use it to move a cursor and type by thought.

Some of these were never close. But notice the direction: from a ruler's image, to numbers on paper, to codes on goods, to chips under the skin and inside the skull. The mark has never been closer to being possible.

The number: 666

Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.

Revelation 13:18, KJV

In Hebrew and Greek, letters doubled as numbers, so every name had a sum. Written in Hebrew letters, "Nero Caesar", the emperor who burned Christians alive in Rome in AD 64, adds up to 666.

The oldest surviving copy of this verse, a papyrus found in Egypt and known as P115, reads 616, which is the same name spelled the Latin way. Many scholars therefore see Nero in the number; many believers expect a final, greater fulfillment in a ruler still to come, as the first persecutor foreshadows the last.

Irenaeus, who learned from Polycarp, a disciple of John, wrote around AD 180 that it is "more certain, and less hazardous, to await the fulfilment of the prophecy" than to guess the name. Wisdom still says the same.

God's seal on his own

Revelation's mark is a counterfeit. Before it appears, God seals his own servants "in their foreheads" (Revelation 7:3), and the redeemed stand with the Lamb "having his Father's name written in their foreheads" (14:1).

Moses told Israel to bind God's words "for a sign upon thine hand" and "as frontlets between thine eyes" (Deuteronomy 6:8): the hand for what we do, the forehead for what we think. Ezekiel saw a mark set on the foreheads of those who grieved over the evil around them (Ezekiel 9:4).

So the question Revelation asks is not only what is on your hand, but whose name is written on you. The Bible's last chapter answers it for the faithful: "And they shall see his face; and his name shall be in their foreheads" (Revelation 22:4).

Common questions

Is Neuralink the mark of the beast?

Many believers think the mark will be a chip of this kind, and Neuralink is the most advanced brain chip yet built. Today it is a medical implant in clinical trials, used by about twenty people, most of them paralyzed, to control a computer by thought. Scripture makes the mark a sign of worship given under the beast's rule (Revelation 14:9), so the device alone is not the mark. A chip that every person must take to buy or sell, under a ruler who demands worship, would be. That is why we watch it closely.

Will the mark of the beast be a microchip?

Scripture does not say what the mark is made of. It says where it goes, the right hand or the forehead; what it does, decide who may buy or sell; and what it means, worship of the beast. A chip fits the first two remarkably well, which is why so many believers expect one. The third is what makes any mark the mark.

What does 666 mean?

Revelation calls it "the number of a man" (13:18). In the ancient world letters were also numbers, and "Nero Caesar" written in Hebrew letters adds up to 666; the oldest surviving copy of the verse reads 616, the Latin spelling of the same name. Many scholars read it as pointing to Nero, and many believers expect a final fulfillment in a ruler still to come.

Was the COVID vaccine the mark of the beast?

No. Many feared it was, but the mark is received in the beast's time, on the hand or the forehead, as a pledge of worship, and it decides who may buy or sell. A vaccine did none of that. Fearing the wrong thing can blind us to the right one.

I already have a chip. Have I taken the mark?

No. The mark is a conscious act of worship of the beast (Revelation 14:9), and no one receives it by accident. If a chip you carry troubles your conscience, talk with your pastor; a doctor can usually remove a chip from the hand.

Is there 666 in barcodes?

No. Books in the 1980s claimed that the three long guard bars on product barcodes stood for 6, 6, 6. They are not digits at all: they only mark where the code begins, divides and ends.
