Revelation 16:16

Armageddon

Armageddon has become a word for any catastrophe. In the Bible it is a place, a gathering and a short battle with a certain end. Here is where it is, who gathers there and why, and the rider from heaven who ends it.

And he gathered them together into a place called in the Hebrew tongue Armageddon.

Revelation 16:16, KJV

The place: the hill of Megiddo

The name appears once in the Bible: "And he gathered them together into a place called in the Hebrew tongue Armageddon" (Revelation 16:16). Most scholars read it as Har Megiddo, the hill or mount of Megiddo, a fortress city above the Jezreel Valley in northern Israel.

Megiddo guarded a pass on the great road between Egypt and Mesopotamia, and armies fought there again and again. Deborah's song remembers the kings of Canaan who "fought in Taanach by the waters of Megiddo" (Judges 5:19), and King Josiah fell there in battle (2 Kings 23:29). By John's day the name meant a battlefield of kings.

The gathering: the sixth bowl

"And the sixth angel poured out his vial upon the great river Euphrates; and the water thereof was dried up, that the way of the kings of the east might be prepared" (Revelation 16:12). John sees three unclean spirits like frogs come out of the mouths of the dragon, the beast and the false prophet: "For they are the spirits of devils, working miracles, which go forth unto the kings of the earth and of the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of God Almighty" (Revelation 16:13-14).

In the middle of the warning comes a word for believers: "Behold, I come as a thief. Blessed is he that watcheth, and keepeth his garments" (Revelation 16:15). Armageddon is a gathering by deception. The nations are drawn there by lying spirits, to fight against God himself.

Faithful and True

"And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war. His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns… and his name is called The Word of God" (Revelation 19:11-13). The armies of heaven follow him, "clothed in fine linen, white and clean" (Revelation 19:14).

"And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations" (Revelation 19:15), and on his vesture and thigh is written "KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS" (Revelation 19:16). The beast and the kings of the earth gather to make war against him (Revelation 19:19), and the battle ends almost as soon as it begins: the beast and the false prophet are taken and cast into the lake of fire (Revelation 19:20). The sword that wins is the word from his mouth.

Zechariah saw the same day from the earth: "his feet shall stand in that day upon the mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem on the east, and the mount of Olives shall cleave in the midst thereof" (Zechariah 14:4), and "the LORD shall be king over all the earth" (Zechariah 14:9). The angels at the ascension had promised it: "this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven" (Acts 1:11).

What follows, and how to stand

After the battle John sees Satan bound for a thousand years and the saints reigning with Christ (Revelation 20:1-6), then the last judgment, and then a new heaven and a new earth where "God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes" (Revelation 21:4). Isaiah's promise comes true: "they shall beat their swords into plowshares… neither shall they learn war any more" (Isaiah 2:4).

Do not fear the headlines

A war in the Middle East is not Armageddon until the nations gather against Christ himself. "See that ye be not troubled" (Matthew 24:6).

Watch, and keep your garments

"Blessed is he that watcheth, and keepeth his garments" (Revelation 16:15): stay faithful, clean and ready.

Pray for peace

"Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: they shall prosper that love thee" (Psalm 122:6).

Trust the outcome

The battle of that great day ends with a word from the one called "KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS" (Revelation 19:16).

Common questions

Where is Armageddon?

Most scholars read the name as Har Megiddo, the hill of Megiddo, an ancient fortress above the Jezreel Valley in northern Israel, where many battles were fought in biblical times (Judges 5:19; 2 Kings 23:29).

What happens at Armageddon?

The kings of the earth, gathered by deceiving spirits (Revelation 16:13-16), come together with the beast to make war against Christ, who returns from heaven as the rider called Faithful and True. The beast and the false prophet are taken, and the armies fall by the sword of his mouth (Revelation 19:11-21).

Is Armageddon the end of the world?

Not in Scripture's sense. It ends the beast's rule and opens the reign of Christ (Revelation 20:1-6), followed by the last judgment and a new heaven and a new earth (Revelation 21).

Is the war in the Middle East Armageddon?

No present war fits what Revelation describes: all the kings of the earth gathered against God, and the visible return of Christ to end the battle. Many believers watch the region closely, as the timeline on this site sets out, while setting no date.

Who are the kings of the east?

Revelation 16:12 says the Euphrates is dried up "that the way of the kings of the east might be prepared". Readers through history have identified them with many eastern powers; Scripture does not name them.
