What sets Square apart
The square is the aspect of a quarter of the circle, 90 degrees, and it joins signs three apart that always share a modality: cardinal with cardinal, fixed with fixed, mutable with mutable. Same mode, different element, so the two planets want the same kind of movement from incompatible materials. The Greeks called the figure the tetragon, and Ptolemy classes it with the opposition as an unharmonious relation.

The square in the traditional sources
The square, which the old books call the quartile, joins signs three apart, a quarter of the circle. Firmicus says the fourth house, in square to the Ascendant, has a strong bond with the life. Abu Ma'shar rates it dislike, a medium enmity.
- Distance: 90 degrees, a quarter of the circle. Ptolemy counts it as three signs (the quartile); Abu Ma'shar counts it by whole signs, the fourth and tenth signs.
- Rating (Abu Ma'shar): dislike, a medium enmity.
- Nature (Ptolemy): discordant, because it joins signs of different sex.
- Side (as Dykes records it): the fourth sign is the left, or sinister, aspect, and the tenth sign is the right, or dexter.
- Origin in the Thema Mundi (Firmicus and Bonatti, as Dykes reports it): the domiciles of Mars and the luminaries.

- Taurus: Aquarius and Leo
- Gemini: Pisces and Virgo

Dorotheus says an aspect by quartile or opposition from a malefic harms, and that a benefic's aspect removes the evil of a malefic. Ptolemy makes the square discordant because it joins signs of different sex. In Ptolemy's reading of the father's life, Saturn in quartile or opposition to the Sun, with both cadent, means illness, and with both angular a short life.
