What sets Electional Astrology apart
Electional astrology works backward: instead of reading a chart that already exists, the astrologer searches a span of future dates for a moment whose chart is sound, then sets the start there. The old texts treat the Moon first, asking that she be free of harsh contacts, not combust and not void of course, with the ruler of the Ascendant in good condition. Greek authors called such beginnings katarchai, and the Arabic writers called them choices, ikhtiyarat.
- Greek term: katarchai, meaning beginnings or inceptions
- Arabic term: ikhtiyarat, meaning choices
- Source: Dorotheus of Sidon, Carmen Astrologicum, Book V, is on inceptions
- Chief factor: the Moon: her sign, her aspects and whether she is void of course
- Void of course: in the traditional rule, the Moon makes no further aspect before leaving her sign
Often mistaken for something else: Horary reads the chart of a question at the moment it is asked; electional chooses a moment and does not read a question.
