Astrologers calculate the point in more than one way. Mean Lilith follows the average apogee and moves smoothly; true, or oscillating, Lilith follows the actual apogee, which wobbles and can stand as much as thirty degrees away from the mean. Most astrologers use the mean point, which is why two programs can put the same person's Lilith in different signs.

Who Lilith was

The name comes from Jewish legend. The Alphabet of Ben Sira, a medieval text, makes Lilith Adam's first wife, made from the earth as he was, who would not lie beneath him and left Eden rather than submit. Older Mesopotamian lore knew the lilitu as night spirits, and the Bible names a lilith once, among the wild creatures of the ruined land in Isaiah 34:14, where the King James Version has "the screech owl".
