About this tool and its method
How the calculation works
Most sign tables round the boundaries, which is why two tables can disagree about a March 20th birthday. With membership, thisThis tool computes the Sun's true ecliptic longitude for your birth moment using standard astronomical formulas (accurate to a fraction of a degree) and divides the circle into the twelve 30-degree signs starting at 0° Aries. Without a birth time it checks the whole day: if the Sun changed signs that day, it tells you so and asks for the time.

Your Sun sign in the old textbooks
The traditional astrologers read each sign through its ruler, its triplicity lords and its class. Before the outer planets were found, every sign had one of the seven visible planets as its ruler, and Dorotheus gave each element three lords: one by day, one by night and one as partner. Ptolemy classed the signs masculine and feminine in turn, starting from Aries, which puts the fire and air signs on the masculine side.

The Sun itself is at home in Leo, exalted in Aries, in detriment in Aquarius and in its fall in Libra: the old authors' way of saying where its light was thought to work most and least easily. These are the textbooks' views, not a verdict on anyone born under them.

Common questions
Do I need my birth time?
Only if you were born on a cusp day. The calculator checks the Sun’s real position for your whole birth date; if the Sun changed signs that day, adding your time and time zone settles it exactly.
How accurate is the calculation?
It uses the standard low-precision solar position formulas from astronomical practice, accurate to a small fraction of a degree - far finer than the 30-degree width of a sign.
Is my sun sign my whole chart?
No. A full birth chart also places the Moon, rising sign, and planets in houses. The sun sign is the headline, not the whole story.
