About this tool and its method
How element chemistry works
Each sign carries one of four elements. Fire and Air feed each other, Earth and Water hold each other, and same-element pairs amplify what they share. Modality adds the second layer: Cardinal signs start, Fixed signs hold, Mutable signs adapt - and two signs of the same modality often compete for the same role.
How the old books rated sign pairs
The traditional astrologers counted two signs by whole signs and gave each distance a name. Abu Ma’shar’s Abbreviation rates them: signs a sextile apart are a half-friendship, a square apart dislike, a medium enmity, a trine apart the highest friendship, and opposite signs malevolence. Two in one sign are assembled. Ptolemy counts signs one or five apart as inconjunct, sharing none of his four aspects. Each pairing’s own page also says how each sign’s ruler fares in the other sign. These are the old authors’ ratings of signs, not a verdict on two people.

Common questions
Can incompatible elements still work?
Yes. Element friction describes the default chemistry, not a verdict. Full synastry between two complete charts regularly overrides a difficult sun-sign pairing.
Which signs match best with mine?
As a rule of thumb: Fire pairs with Air, Earth pairs with Water, and same-element pairs amplify each other. Every specific pairing has its own page in the compatibility library.
Is this the same as synastry?
No. Synastry compares two full birth charts placement by placement. This checker reads the sun-sign layer, which is the traditional starting point.
