What sets Applying Aspect apart

Application is judged by speed: the faster planet is closing on the slower one, so the aspect has yet to perfect. The Moon is the great applier, covering about 13 degrees a day, while the Sun gains only about 1 degree a day. The rule can reverse when a planet is retrograde, since a slower planet moving backward can walk toward a faster one.

Often mistaken for something else: A separating aspect is the same angle after the peak, with the distance growing. Applying and separating describe direction of travel, not the strength of the angle.

Application in the traditional sources

Ptolemy defines the pair in the Tetrabiblos: the earlier planet in the zodiac applies to the later one, and when it moves past, it separates from it. Abu Ma'shar calls the application connection, and describes it as a lighter planet within the heavier planet's orb coming toward it by degree, in the same sign or by aspect.

Beginning of power: within 12 degrees (the Greek introduction), within 3 degrees as corporal (Bonatti), within 6 degrees (al-Qabisi).
Connection can also be by latitude, the planets' distance north or south of the ecliptic, and not only by longitude (Abu Ma'shar).
Bonatti uses the word ante for a later degree and post for an earlier one when two planets aspect: an aspect cast forward into the planet's path is worse. A superior planet in front of the Sun is worse than one behind it.

Application as the road to perfection

In horary astrology, the application is the thing the question turns on. Bonatti's first method of perfection, the way a matter is brought to its end, is joining: an applying aspect or conjunction with nothing between the planets.
