What sets Separating Aspect apart
A separating aspect has passed its exact moment and the distance is widening, so the faster planet has gone by. The old horary rule makes this the sign of what is already done: the planet the Moon has just left describes what came before, the one it approaches describes what comes next. A separating pair can still sit well inside its orb and be fully active, yet it counts as aftermath, not approach.
- Test: the distance between the two is growing from the exact angle
- Past and future: in horary the Moon's last aspect looks back, its next one forward
- Orb: a separating aspect is measured within the same orb as an applying one
- Moon: leaves an aspect at about 13 degrees a day, so it passes quickly
- Reversal: a station or retrograde can bring a separating pair back to exact
Often mistaken for something else: An applying aspect is the same angle before the peak. A separating one is not weaker for being later; it reads as consequence where the applying one reads as approach.

How people learned to read the sky, from Babylon to the day you were born.

Separation in the traditional sources
Separation is the reverse of application. In Ptolemy's wording the earlier planet applies to the later one, and once it passes the exact degree it separates from it. Bonatti's rule of ante and post gives the direction: for planet-to-planet aspects, ante means a later degree and post means an earlier one, and a forward-cast aspect lies in the planet's path and is worse.
For cusps the rule is reversed: ante means earlier degrees and post means later ones, and the degrees behind a cusp gain strength and span more degrees, while the degrees ahead fade quickly into the cadent house (Dykes on Bonatti).
Separation and the phases of a planet
Ptolemy also tracks a planet's relation to the Sun through its phases. A planet from its first emergence to its first station is moist; from the station until it rises at night, at opposition, it is hot; from opposition to its second station it is dry; and from the second station to its disappearance it is cold. Al-Qabisi gives the same sequence as ages: childhood, youth, completed age and senility.
The Moon runs the same cycle every month: moist from new to first quarter, hot to full, dry to last quarter and cold to dark.
The story behind Separating Aspect
Traditional astrologers used separating aspects to distinguish past conditions from future developments.
The spiritual meaning of Separating Aspect
Spiritually, Separating Aspect asks what lesson remains after the peak has passed.
Why Separating Aspect matters
Separating Aspect matters because it often describes what has already happened, been absorbed, or begun to fade.
Separating Aspect in practice: an example
The Moon separating from square Mars can show conflict that has already occurred but still colors the situation.
Where readings of Separating Aspect go wrong
It is a mistake to ignore separating aspects. They can describe context, memory, and consequences.
